Last week I tried to.... my creative project challenge!

Last week I tried to upholster a chair... No wait , let me start from the beginning..

I set myself a challenge, it`s a creative project challenge! And the challenge is to make out of something old , something new again! I`m not allowed to use new products, except essentials like glue, threads, paints etc, etc.I can`t buy any new fabrics, everything needs to be made out of secondhand/vintage materials, out of op shops, garage sales, donations by others or from my own personal collection.

With this challenge I also want to try to learn new skills, do some up-cycling , do things I haven`t done before, get out of my comfort zone..

I like getting out of my comfort zone , it works my brain and my heart starts ticking a bit faster.. Sometimes, I admit, more out of frustration then out of excitement , but I`m so happy when it works out!

So last week I decided to try to upholster a chair, I had this chair forever, a cute 50`s model, lovely shape , but she was a bit tired looking and my intention was always to do her up!

Last week I started..

I never really upholstered a chair before, I have upholstered some pillows on chairs and painted some chairs , but never the whole lot.

The trick is , people told me , to keep the old fabric as a guideline for a pattern and that is exactly what I did, I made a little rookie mistake when putting it back together { the back goes on last, so you can hide bits and pieces} but after fixing it up , I was pretty happy with the end result!

Admittedly, this chair was definitely an easier shape chair to start with , but hey, set small goals to get to a bigger goal. So my next upholstery project is a bigger and " harder" chair and after that I still have two more lounges that need a bit of an overhaul!

Below are some photo`s of my first upholstered chair, the chair I got from the local tip shop and the old curtains I bought in a vintage shop in San Francisco! I sanded down the wooden bits and just gave it a quick clear varnish.

Let me know what you think, I think it has a bit of a Danish vintage design feel!

During, pulling the chair apart! Have you notice my little helper in the background?!

Keep the fabric pieces!

Bottom bit is done !

End result!

Maybe not perfect { yet} , but I love it ..
